THE INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION
UNION (ITU) Bandar Seri Begawan - The Deputy Minister of Communications, Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Awang Haji Yusoff bin Haji Abd Hamid, left for Antalya, Turkey this afternoon (3rd November 2006) to attend the International Telecommunication Union’s 17th Plenipotentiary Conference which will take place from 6 to 24 November 2006 at the Sungate Port Royal Hotel. The conference is expected to be attended by nearly 2000 participants from over 150 countries representing both the government and private sector as well as regional and international organizations. The Plenipotentiary Conference is a top policy making body of the International Telecommunication Union and is usually held every four years. The Conference is the key event at which ITU Member States decide on the future role of the organization, thereby determining the organization’s ability to influence and affect the development of Information and Communication technologies. The conference will also seek to provide new vision and direction to ITU (to which Brunei Darussalam has been a member since 1984) to facilitate the worldwide growth and development of telecommunications and information and communication technologies for the benefit of all. According to Dato Paduka Haji Yusoff, some of the significant highlights during the conference will be the adoption of the four-year strategic and financial plan and the election for several posts for senior management team of the organization, the members of the council and the members of the radio regulations board. The Deputy Minister of Communications also highlighted the importance to select the right candidates to serve the organization who will be able to protect our interests as well as steer the organization into the right direction in the light of the recent and forthcoming development of the ICT industry. The conference is also held timely in the light of the telecommunication sector and the ICT industries are coming to grips with new trends in convergence in which, Dato Paduka Haji Yusoff has mentioned that this conference will be an excellent opportunity for him and his delegation to exchange views and information in areas of policy and technology development with other participating Member States of the conference. The ITU is a specialized agency within the United Nations, established in 1865 to act as an impartial, international organization within which governments and the private sector could work together to coordinate the operation of telecommunication networks and services and advances development the development of communications technology. Although the organization remains relatively unknown to the general public, ITU’s work over more than on hundred years has helped create a global communications network which now integrates a huge range of technologies, yet remains one of the most reliable man-made systems ever developed. The membership of ITU includes almost all countries and over 650 private members from the telecommunications, broadcasting and information technology sectors. Accompanying Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Haji Yusoff are senior officials from the Ministry of Communications and the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam.
