THE SECOND ASEAN-CHINA ICT MINISTERIAL FORUM Penang, Malaysia – Brunei Darussalam’s delegation led by the Yang Berhormat Minister of Communications, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong and the entourage returned home today after attending the Second ASEAN-China ICT Business Forum and the Second ASEAN-China Ministerial Forum in Penang, Malaysia from 20-21 April 2006. Accompanying the Minister to the forum was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof bin Haji Mohd Hassan and three senior officials of the Ministry. The forums were conducted in a cordial ASEAN spirit to discuss the progress of cooperation and collaboration in advancing the catalytic role of the ICT sector in promoting the region’s economic growth and prosperity. During the Ministerial Forum, Yang Berhormat the Minister of Communications, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong delivered a statement in which he mentioned that the successful implementation of the Beijing Declaration is extremely important to complete what ASEAN and China have initiated. Yang Berhormat Pehin also urged the ASEAN-China Senior Officials to have further discussions to develop relevant projects such as one that would lead to the building of ASEAN-China Information Superhighway in a bid to promote information flow among countries. He further urged to continue building the momentum of ASEAN-China cooperation to promote mutual economic stability, growth and mutual prosperity in the region. An agreed output of the Ministerial Forum is ASEAN-China Joint Statement which addresses the common understanding in moving the ICT development forward. The Joint Ministerial Statement among others highlighted that a number of workshops have been organized in China covering areas in capacity building, universal services and information superhighway. The Joint Ministerial Statement further noted that more than ten activities and events are being planned this year. ASEAN and China ICT Ministers further agreed to further exchange views and experiences in the migration of PSTN to NGN, enhancement of rural communications and Internet governance. They also agreed that studies may be conducted on e-commerce and e-government, regional standards and MRAs for telecom equipment certification and ICT expertise certification. Brunei Darussalam will host the 6th ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministerial Meeting in September this year. Issued by Ministry of Communications |
