THE 5TH BIMP-EAGA TRANSPORT,
INFRASTRUCTURE AND ICT DEVELOPMENT (TIICTD) CLUSTER MEETING
Bandar Seri Begawan: The 5th BIMP-EAGA Transport, Infrastructure and ICT
Development (TIICTD) Cluster
Meeting was held at the Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong from the 1st
to 2nd April, 2008. Mr. Ang Kian Guan, Director of
Transportation, Ministry of Communications, Brunei Darussalam and also the
current Chairman of the TIICTD Cluster will chair the Meeting. The
BIMP-EAGA TIICTD Cluster consists of the Working Group on Air Linkages,
Sea Linkages, Land Transport, ICT and Telecommunications and Construction
and Construction Materials. Amongst the achievements of the Cluster in
2007 were the signing of three Memorandum of Understandings on i)
Expansion of Air Linkages; ii) Cross-Border Movement of Buses and Coaches;
and iii) Establishing and Promoting Efficient and Integrated Sea Linkages.
The
meeting will be deliberating on the development of the transport sectors
within BIMP-EAGA and also related sectors such as infrastructure,
constructions materials and information communication technology. Discussion will also focus on the necessary support mechanism for the
initiatives identified in the 2008 BIMP-EAGA action plan as well as the
on-going implementation of the three Memorandum of Understanding such as
the issuance of permits to operate buses across-borders between Brunei
Darussalam, the State of Kalimantan, Indonesia, and the State of Sabah and
Sarawak, Malaysia, to promote airlines to service the EAGA designated
routes with Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights and to encourage shipping
activities within the region. Participants
of the meeting will comprise of representatives from the government sector
of the four BIMP-EAGA countries, BIMP-EAGA Facilitation Centre, the Asian
Development Bank and the German Technical Cooperation as BIMP-EAGA
Development Partners, the ASEAN Secretariat and the private sector. The
meeting will provide an opportunity for the BIMP-EAGA member countries and
private sector representatives to discuss on their respective
cross-cutting issues and concerns as well as to exchange views to attain a
more conducive business environment within the BIMP-EAGA region. Issued
