International airport moves to boost security, comfort

THE Brunei International Airport is currently undergoing an upgrading process in several of its areas as part of the Department of Civil Aviation's continuous efforts to accommodate the needs for the security and comfort of its visitors and passengers, said a press release issued yesterday.

In the statement, the department said that a number of its officers and staff members have joined personnel from other agencies at the airport for courses held in the country and also abroad. This move was aimed to further ensure that the level of expertise of the department's personnel, especially those in charge of security service, are on par with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The department has also purchased and installed new CCTV for added security measure as well as two bomb containment units used to destroy explosives, said the press release.

To increase the safety and security of controlled areas at the airport, the department also put emphasis on the usage of colour codes on vehicles that are allowed to operate inside the controlled areas (airside). In addition to this, suggestions were also made on moving the headquarters from the area to a new location which will be executed some time in the first half of this year.

In terms of enhancing the comfort of passengers, a zen garden was also created by the department with cooperation from HSBC. The garden is a place for passengers, particularly those on long haul flights, to relax during transit, said the press release.

It was launched by Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong during his working visit recently.The airport is also undergoing repairs and maintenance work on the drainage and air-conditioning systems following the unexpected incident on January 15 when the arrival hall was overflowed with water due to the heavy downpour, said the press release. This has been conducted over the past years as one of the department's efforts in enhancing and ensuring that all facilities are in working order for all visitors to the airport.

The department requested for cooperation from all parties including the public to assist in maintaining the airport facilities which has been provided. Furthermore, the public are encouraged to provide suggestions through the officers on duty at the airport's counters or by calling 2344112 / 2331065 / 2330142 extension 1352 or the department's website at www.civil-aviation.gov.bn.
